Indian Thali or Fast Food ?

Weekend calls for outings and shopping. How can be outing be complete with eating out? Being a mother of Gen Z, I have been exploring Fast Food, Italian cuisine, Chinese cuisine, and whatnot.
Last Saturday I was lucky enough to influence kids to try Indian Thali. Surprisingly, kids enjoyed the food also the service of the staff serving food, the way they were requesting, and offer 2nd and 3rd servings. The variety of food was an attempt to balance the tastes of different age groups, and different communities. It’s an amazing concept of India Thali.
Indians are serious about their food and much before dieticians brought the concept of balanced meals. India knew how to incorporate all kinds of items in their platter to make it scrumptious and satisfying. The concept of the Thali has been ingrained in India’s dining traditions since primitive times. The items change depending on the geographical reason and culture.

History and culture behind the Thali –

Unlike the continental or western buffet, Indians believe in being served all at once and a second helping if necessary. The Thali is the product of several age-old aspects of Indian life, the importance of nutritionally balanced meals, variety of flavors, portion control, and aversion to sharing food to limit the spread of communal diseases.

The word thali is derived from ‘thaal’, a circular tray. The earliest thali was made from banana leaves in southern India. Times changed and India shifted to brass, to biodegradable containers to plastic, and to porcelain.

Important thalis of India –

As Indians got curious about the roots of their dietary habits, making a shift from fast foods rejected by health experts; thalis made a comeback. Soon came vegetarian Jain thalis without garlic or onions in Gujarat, Madrasi thalis, and North India thalis with paneer, chole, saag, daal makhani, and a choice of bread and rice. Each state started having its own thali with regional varieties all in one platter.

What are your plans for this weekend? Indian Thali or Fast Food.
